How

Circulating stem cells can

The first human embryonic
stem cells were grown in vitro, in a petri dish, in the mid 1990s. Rapidly,
scientists were successful at growing them for many generations and to
trigger their differentiation into virtually any kind of cells, i.e. brain
cells, heart cells, liver cells, bone cells, pancreatic cells, etc. When
scientists tried growing adult stem cells, the endeavor was met with less
success, as adult stem cells were difficult to grow in vitro for more than
a few generations. This led to the idea that embryonic stem cells have
more potential than adult stem cells. In addition, the ethical concerns
linked to the use of embryonic stem cells have led to a disproportionate
representation of embryonic stem cells in the media. But recent developments
over the past 2-3 years have established that adult stem cells have capabilities
comparable to embryonic stem cells in the human body, not in the test tube.
Many studies have indicated that simply releasing stem cells from the bone
marrow can help support the body’s natural process for renewal of tissues
and organs.
The bone marrow constantly
produces stem cells for the entire life of an individual. Stem cells released
by the bone marrow are responsible for the constant renewal of red blood
cells and lymphocytes (immune cells). A 25-30% increase in the number of
circulating stem cells is well within physiological range and does not
constitute stress on the bone marrow environment. The amount of active
bone marrow amounts to about 2,600 g (5.7 lbs), with about 1.5 trillion
marrow cells. A 25-30% increase in the number of circulating stem cells
supported by the consumption of 1 gram of the AFA extract used by Drapeau
in his landmark study,corresponds to approximately 3 million cells, which
is a small portion of the stem cells present in the bone marrow. Stem cells
that do not reach any tissue or become blood cells return to the bone marrow.
Effectiveness of stem cell
"enhancers" was demonstrated in a double-blind
study published in September 2007 in the Journal of Cardiovascular Revascularization

samples, volunteers were given stem cell "enhancers"or placebo. Thereafter,
blood samples were taken at 30, 60 and 120 minutes after taking the consumables.

The Story of Natural
Stem Cell Enhancers

A little over two decades
ago, a new herbal supplement named Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), an aquatic
botanical, made its appearance on the marketplace. Rapidlly, AFA became
popular for the wide variety of health benefits reported by consumers.
Over the years we identified the presence in AFA of various bioactive compounds
such as phycocyanin, a strong natural anti-inflammatory compound, a polysaccharide
supporting immune function, and phenylethylamine (PEA), a molecule knows
as "the molecule of love," which increases mental clarity and provides
a sense of well-being. Nevertheless, in spite of the identification of
these various components, many health benefits reported by consumers remained
unexplained.
At the turn of the 21st century,
data began appearing in the scientific literature describing the potential
of embryonic stem cells (ESC). ESC were shown to have the ability to become
any kind of cells in the body. Soon after, studies revealed that adult
stem cells (ASC) also had the ability of becoming virtually any kind of
cells in the body. When this discovery was made, we hypothesized that ASC
constituted the natural renewal sytem of the body, and we published this
hypothesis in the journal, Medical Hypotheses (October 2002). Our idea
at the time was this: if ASC indeed constituted the natural renewal system
of the body, with ASC being able to become any cell type of the body, then
supporting this process could lead to a wide variety of health benefits.
Given the broad spectrum of benefits reported by AFA consumers, we simply
hypothesized that AFA was supporting aspects of stem cell physiology.
With this in mind, we initiated
a series of laboratory experiments and soon discovered that consumption
of large quantity of AFA (greater than 5 grams) increased the number of
circulating stem cells by up to 30%. As we pursued our investigation to
identify the compound in AFA responsible for this effect, we actually identified
two specific compounds supporting both the release of stem cells frrom
the bone marrow and their migration out of the blood into tissues. We then
proceeded to concentrate these compounds ouf of AFA, achieving 5:1 concentrates
for both compounds, and blended these compounds to make stem cell "enhancers".
One gram of stem cell "enhancers" supports the release of stem cells from
the bone marrow and increases the number of stem cells from the bone marrow
and increases the number of circulating stem cells by up to 30%. stem cell
"enhancers" also concentrates phycocyanin and PEA, other important compounds
found in AFA.
In 2007, a double-blind,
placebo-controlled study was published in a well respected medical journal,
in which it was found that 1 gram of an AFA extract being researched by
Drapeau and his colleagues did in fact result in an average 25% increase
in the number of naturally circulating adult stem cells. This promising
finding gave birth to the natural product category known as 'stem cell
